I present a method that allows to reduce gauge symmetries in constructing gauge-invariant fields out of the standard matter and Yang-Mills fields - gauge potential and field strength. The geometric underpinning is described so as to distinguish the proposed method from other means to reduce gauge symmetries. Two applications are discussed: the electroweak sector of the Standard Model, and a gauge formulation of conformal gravity in terms of Cartan geometry.
