We consider pure Yang-Mills theories in 4d Euclidean space-time and the temperature phase transition at T=T_c. We argue that the transition can be viewed as a 4d-3d transition. Moreover the three-dimensional description at T>T_c is valid in terms of particles, or 3d field theory while at T less than T_c strings are to be included. Both electric and magnetic strings find their counterparts in terms of 3d particles at T>T_c. The picture is supported both by the lattice data and holographic topological considerations.
