Non-Abelian magnetic monopoles responsible for quark confinement

Résumé :
We show that a ``gauge-invariant’’ magnetic monopole inherent in the Wilson loop is obtained by using a non-Abelian Stokes theorem for the Wilson loop operator. For SU(3) Wilson loop in the fundamental representation, such magnetic monopole becomes U(2) non-Abelian magnetic monopole, which is different from the U(1) x U(1) Abelian magnetic monopole obtained by the Abelian projection. Using a novel reformulation of SU(3) Yang-Mills theory based on new field variables and numerical simulations on a lattice, we demonstrate that the non-Abelian magnetic monopole gives a dominant contribution in the fundamental string tension extracted from the SU(3) Wilson loop average.
