Numerical modeling for natural hazards prevention

Résumé :
En cloture du colloque "Methode". Natural hazards can be defined as a threat of a naturally occurring event that will have a negative effect on people or the environment. They can have many different origins: atmospheric, hydrologic, geologic (especially seismic and volcanic), etc. Unfortunately they are not easy to predict so that the cost (human and material) of the damages they produce is huge. Usually, the only thing we can do is to be prepared. Numerical analysis can be a useful tool in designing evacuation plans in the event of such catastrophes. We shall focus in the particular natural hazards that are related to hydrodynamics such as river floods and tsunamis. Some of the models used for these phenomena will be presented as well as different case scenarios where they can and have been applied. One important fact that has to be kept in mind is that when solving such models for real physical situations is that the computational power of just one personal computer does not suffice. In those cases, some advances in computer science like GPU computing will aid in our task.
