Why do we trust AdS/CFT holography?

Résumé :
The AdS/CFT correspondence (an exact equivalence of string theory on AdS(5)xS(5) and supersymmetric Yang-Mills (SYM) theory in four dimensions) was put forward as a conjecture. It still has not been derived from first principles, but there is a huge body of evidence from direct calculations, both in SYM and in string theory, that leaves little doubts in its correctness. I will review explicit calculations in SYM and in string theory that can be directly compared to each another.
