Symbolic dynamics for the geodesic flow on locally symmetric orbifolds

For the analysis of the geodesic flow on a locally symmetric space or, more generally, on a locally symmetric orbifold via a transfer operator one needs a discretization of the geodesic flow, hence a symbolic dynamical system. Usually, there are several reasonable choices for the symbolic dynamics. We will present a program towards a geometric construction of symbolic dynamical systems for a huge class of locally symmetric orbifolds of rank one and describe its current status. This construction has the advantage that it does not involve the classification of symmetric spaces of rank one and that the arising transfer operators are of a particularly simple structure.
