Résumé :
We study the higher-derivative equations for gauge potentials of arbitrary mixed-symmetry type obtained setting to zero either the traces or the divergences of the corresponding curvature tensors. We show that in both cases one describes the consistent propagation of massless particles with given (arbitrary) spin. Ricci-like equations, obtained when the curvatures are assumed to be traceless, encode the propagation of given irreducible representations of the orthogonal group or, in other words, of single massless particles. When only conditions of vanishing divergences are assumed, on the other hand, the corresponding Maxwell-like equations are found to propagate the same reducible spectrum of massless particles as for the free bosonic string in the limit of zero tension.
